Did you know Port Royal was originally a Mangrove Swamp? But now it is a premier luxurious boating community in Naples Florida. There are about 500 or so single family homes in this magnificent community, with most having backyard docks on Naples Bay or one of the deep water feeder canals. Some of these homes with boat docks can handle boats up to 100 feet in length.
Port Royal's name and the names of its streets reflect the retired advertising genius, John Glen Sample's fascination with Florida history. He started buying up the property in 1938. John Glen was fascinated with the pirates that used to shelter in its coves. "Port Royal" comes from the Jamaican city, which was one of the focal points of piracy in the 1600s. Street names like Gillion Drive, Rum Row, and Kingston Cresent, also point to his fascination with pirates.
John Glen Samples ambition in 1938 was "to make Port Royal the finest place in the world to live." I believe he has done just that.
